This programme provides opportunities to dropout students, particularly girls from Dalit and other marginalized communities in the villages, to get vocational training and gain employable skills . The students are given training not only in vocational skills but also in life coping skills and communication skills which helps them to come out with self confidence and positive attitude towards life with the ability to take right decisions and cope with stress. It also helps to enhance their personalities, understanding and maturity and prepare them for wider participation and leadership. It is a one year residential program. They are also encouraged to complete their schooling while at Pravaham. All the students who successfully complete the course are given placement in partner institutions in Chennai and Bangalore.
The cost of the program is Rs. 35,000.00 (US $600.00 approx.). This includes training, boarding, lodging, uniforms, and study materials. The entire cost is sponsored by friends and well wishers of Pravaham and made freely available to the students and their families as they are too poor and prefer to educate boys rather than the girls. The Pravaham comminty college is recognized by the Tamil-Nadu Open University.
Pravaham is conducting community education program from the past 10 years. 250 students have graduated as Health Assistants since 2004. This program has made tremendous impact on the lives of these young women causing transformation in all areas of their life.
Many Dalit children from the local villages are first generation learners and about 70% of them drop out before they complete high school. Pravaham runs tuition centres in the local villages for such school going children to help them cope better with their studies and to pursue higher education and come up in life. These students are given special coaching in Mathematics, English, and Science. This program helps in bringing down the percentage of school dropouts among marginalized communities in the local area.
Model School Outreach program - School children from neighbouring villages are either brought to the centre or the staff will go to the schools in rural areas to teach the children with innovative methods that make education more interesting. It is a time of joy and learning for the children with arts and crafts, singing, quizzes, games, and the like. When possible, the students are also provided with hot, nutritional meals. The objective is to make it a memorable day out for rural children and to expose them to new and healthy learning experiences.
Pravaham is surrounded by villages where there are no proper medical facilities. Pravaham reaches out to meet these needs by organizing free Medical camps, Eye camps, Health education and awareness programmes with the support of local hospitals and private doctors who share the vision of Pravaham.
Pravaham is situated in a serene atmosphere in six acres of greenery, amidst the quiet hills of Palamathy, 12 km away from Vellore (South India). The retreat and training centre provides facilities for Institutions ,families, groups and individuals for retreats ,trainings and meetings. It offers the participants the rare gift of silence and gives an opportunity for learning , meditation, and inner renewal.
